Tautai o le Moana Research Project
From 2019-2021, Va‘atele Education Consulting was contracted by the Ministry of Education and the NZ Pacific Principals’ Association to document the journey of the initial cohort of principals engaged in the ‘Tautai o le Moana’ (TolM) or ‘Wayfinders of the Ocean’ PLD project. TolM provides space for principals of Pasifika learners to engage in professional learning led by Pacific principals. The project supports effective leadership for Pasifika learners, focused on transforming educational outcomes and systems. Dr. Rae Si‘ilata was consultant and researcher to the work, and the final report was written by Dr. Rae, Dr. Meg Jacobs, Martha Aseta, Kyla Hansell & Sam Tu‘itahi. The notion of ancient and modern Pacific wayfinding was related to the research themes, framed as the capabilities of effective school leaders of Pasifika learners. These capabilities include: ‘Reading Signs’, ‘Making Adjustments’, ‘Recalibrating’, and ‘Drawing on Multiple Knowledges’.
